South Carolina gains recruiting momentum as it builds 2027 class

Momentum isn’t a buzzword in recruiting, it’s currency. And right now, Shane Beamer and theSouth Carolina Gamecocksare spending it wisely.

USA TODAY

Coming off a very productive week on the recruiting trail, the Gamecocks announced the addition of three new commitments to their 2027 class, headlined by tight endJudah Lancaster. Out of Tennessee, the Brentwood Academy standout brings a prototype build at 6-foot-5 and over 230 pounds to Columbia.

Lancaster is the kind of frame that forces defensive coordinators into doing uncomfortable math. And in today’s game, elite tight ends are leverage. Lancaster has the tools to become exactly that for the Gamecocks, but he wasn't the only addition turning heads.

Defensive linemanJohn Archerarrives as the highest-rated pledge in the class so far. At 314 pounds, the North Carolina product is projected as a disruptive interior piece that South Carolina needs. Archer is a player who can collapse pockets and reset the line of scrimmage. If developed properly, he won't be just a contributor; he will be an anchor for a playoff-caliber defense in Columbia.

On the perimeter, wide receiverDJ Hugginsadds speed and versatility on the field. The 5-foot-10 playmaker out of Kennesaw, Georgia, chose South Carolina over a strong offer list that includedAlabamaandGeorgia. That decision signals that the Gamecocks aren’t just competing in the recruiting race; they are winning battles.

These recent additions join a growing group of talent that also features safetyJernard Albright, quarterbackJerry Meyer III, and offensive linemanWill Endicott. The result is a recruiting class that has surged from outside the top 60 into the top 40 nationally in a matter of days. The best part is this is just the foundation, not the finished product.

South Carolina remains firmly in the mix for several high-priority targets as summer recruiting starts to heat up. Running backs David Segarra and Brayden Tyson, safety Jayden Aparicio-Bailey, and edge rusher James Pace III have all included the Gamecocks among their finalists. The Gamecocks will also continue to press on key in-state and regional targets, recently hosting defensive lineman Seth Tillman on an official visit alongside fellow priority prospects Frederick Ards III and Stafford Willis.
